What the Mission Trip Will Be Like

abingdon1.jpeg

ThereforeGo Ministries provides week-long high school service trips and other faith-forming events for middle and high school age students. Each year we partner with churches to host SERVE events in their local communities, which are five to seven-day youth mission trips that send students out to care for and restore their world in an environment where they’ll encounter the concepts of justice and missional living. More than just a short service trip, SERVE is a faith-forming experience where the communities, congregations and students involved all experience lasting transformation.

Abingdon SERVE

Pleasant View United Methodist Church is located in the beautiful town of Abingdon, Virginia. Abingdon is part of the metropolitan area of the Tri-Cities TN / VA, which is made up of Bristol, Kingsport and Johnson City. Most people visit the Tri-Cities because of the NASCAR race track in Bristol or because they love country and bluegrass music – Bristol is known as the "birthplace of country music". Our area is surrounded by beautiful lakes, mountains, and streams. What visitors to our area possibly overlook is the poverty that exists around every curve and down every country road. We are in the Appalachian region of the US, one of the most poverty-stricken areas in the country. The coalfields of Southwest Virginia are just minutes from Abingdon, and the coal towns that once were thriving are now shuttered and desolate. We would love for you to join us as we partner with area ministries to address the housing, food and health-care needs of our less fortunate neighbors.

Worksites:

Our SERVE participants will spend their days doing a variety of physical and relational projects. Some examples are;

  • Light construction, home repairs
  • Yard work, outdoor clean-up
  • Working with local food ministries
  • Working with children's and youth ministries in low-income areas

Pre-trip: ThereforeGo Ministries supplies sending church youth leaders with a Digital Resource Box full of helps for adult leaders, vision casting materials (such as parent letter, pastor letter, bulletin insert, etc.) and pre-trip lessons for the youth group. Each adult leader receives the Leaders Guide one month before the trip so they can review the theme material and small group discussion outlines. During the trip: the Speaker, Worship Leader and the Spiritual Life Coordinator from the host church work with youth leaders to weave together the entire experience in light of the Gospel. Personal devotions, small group discussion material and debriefing questions for the work day are all included in the Leaders Guide and discussed in daily Leader Meetings. Post Trip: ThereforeGo Ministries has worked hard with church leaders to develop a post trip plan that helps students think through the spiritual impact of the week and integrate what they've learned in to every day life. The post trip plan is in the Leaders Guide as well as the Digital Resource Box.
