Students Living a Mission is one of Nashville's premier youth missions organizations in reaching the immigrant and refugee population. We are committed to meeting real needs while developing students for lifelong discipleship that includes them learning God's Word and living in out practically on a day-to-day basis. We are invested in our local community year-around and see our work here as a part of the broader work we are invested in globally. We are intentional about helping students develop cross-cultural sensitivity as a means of preparing them to minister to people from all kinds of backgrounds and nationalities. Beyond community service, we love engaging students in times of worship, prayer, meals, and fun in a way that they experience God's presence in each moment whether big or small.

What the Mission Trip Will Be Like

Girls with rakes final.jpg

Beyond being known for its music scene, Nashville has a growing population of immigrant families, who have sought safety from unrest in their own country. SLAM partners with local organizations and community leaders to organize projects that will improve the quality of life for these wonderful and often overlooked people. Even in a city like Nashville, we are reminded that God's love is for all nations of the world!

We serve in a diversity of ways including:

Refugee Apartment Complexes: We work with the management of low-income apartment complexes that provide housing for thousands of neglected immigrants and refugees. We assist these families by facilitating day camps for children, hosting sports camps, and installing community gardens.

Widow Ministry: We have ongoing relationships with widows that live within minutes of our headquarters. We serve them year round via construction projects, landscaping, counseling & prayer, & household cleaning.

Hopewell Community Garden: Students have the chance to work in this garden among others in neighboring towns in order to meet the nutritional needs of refugee, elderly, and homeless individuals. This work also furthers an education in sustainable agriculture that address food insecurity globally.

Local Non-Profits: SLAM partners with dozens of local non-profit organizations that address needs of the elderly, homeless, inner-city children, & other underprivileged populations.

Participants will engage in learning God's word and practice what it means to serve like Jesus. SLAM is truly commited to mobilizing students so they leave the week knowing that the Lord has met them as they have given themselves to others. We want to empower students to continue to do so in their homes, schools, communities, and globally. A SLAM week becomes the launchpad into the calling that the Lord has on each one to love God and others using their unique gifts and relationships.

Here's what youth leaders are saying about their SLAM experience:

"God really used our week at SLAM to push our kids toward having more of a heart for missions. Our students enjoy doing mission projects but are not often using their own initiative to start them. Through our mission projects, God really spoke to multiple of my students and showed them how capable they are in serving others. My students still cannot stop talking about worship." -Louisiana youth leader

"I was challenged by Students Living a Mission to re-think missions as being less about the work (though we did work hard) and more about the people. In the past, my mission trips had been all about the projects; but SLAM made the focus on the people and that helped me see what really mattered. That change in focus has changed how I do ministry to this day.  I worry less about the tasks and more about the people I minister to. Tasks come and go, people are for eternity." Indiana lead pastor

"Evening worship was powerful and moving every night. I've never quite experienced something to that degree in my own life. I was truly humbled and blown away by how these teens and leaders were worshipping our Lord." -Tennessee youth pastor

"SLAM energized me and gave me hope for our youth moving forward. It's harder and harder to see what a community of Christ can look like functioning together. But SLAM bears proof that Christian community can happen in meaningful ways even in the face of a divided time." Indiana youth pastor

"Everything else was very well thought out, intentional, and done with a high-level of excellence. The staff team was amazing. It was one of the best mission experiences I have been a part of and we are already looking forward to future trips." Ohio youth director
