Light a Candle is a locally led program directed by Bonny and Julian Lugayizi, who are deeply committed to sharing God's love and raising up future leaders in Uganda. Each week, they serve children in some of Kampala's most vulnerable communities with nutritious meals, education, mentoring, and gospel-centered discipleship. Women are also empowered through micro-finance groups that help them start small businesses and support their families. The vision reaches beyond immediate needs. Plans are underway to build a community center that will offer vocational training, spiritual care, and expanded outreach. Visiting teams come alongside this ongoing local ministry, assisting with children's programs, home visits, and community outreach. Together, were investing in a generation of young people who know they are loved by God and are equipped to bring lasting transformation to their families and communities.

What the Mission Trip Will Be Like

Women in the Word12 (1)small.jpg

Join a team serving with Forward Edge in one of our long-term partner communities around the world. These aren’t just trips where you “go help”—they’re opportunities to listen, learn, build relationships, and experience the Gospel in new and powerful ways.

As you enter another culture with humility and curiosity, you’ll discover God at work in ways that may surprise you. You'll partner with local leaders already doing amazing work in their communities. Together, you’ll bring hope, healing, and tangible help to those impacted by poverty and injustice. But you’ll also receive something just as powerful in return.

Expect to:

  • Build meaningful relationships across cultures
  • Discover new dimensions of God's heart through the global Church
  • Challenge your assumptions and uncover cultural blind spots
  • Grow in your faith and develop deeper compassion
  • Experience the gospel in fresh and unexpected ways

Our trips are grounded in listening, mutual respect, and long-term partnerships. You won’t arrive with all the answers—you’ll come alongside others as a learner, a servant, and a friend.

This experience is only the beginning. What God starts during your trip can continue to shape your values, your faith, and how you engage with the world around you—long after you return home.

Join a story bigger than yourself—and come home ready to live it out, wherever you are.

We provide intentional discipleship before, during, and after the trip to help team members grow spiritually and engage cross-culturally with humility and wisdom. Before the Trip: Each team walks through pre-trip SURF training (Servanthood, Unity, Respect, and Flexibility) designed to prepare them for both the practical and spiritual aspects of their experience. Lessons explore God’s mission, cultural awareness, serving like Jesus, and how the Gospel challenges every culture—including our own. Each session includes guided discussion, Scripture, interactive activities, and practices to help team members reflect and prepare their hearts. During the Trip: Our trained Forward Edge Facilitator leads nightly team debriefs, offering space to reflect on the day’s experiences, process emotions, and listen for what God may be saying through it all. These times often deepen team unity and allow individuals to wrestle with spiritual insights or cultural challenges in a safe, prayerful environment. Re-entry Preparation: On the final night of the trip, teams participate in a re-entry session that helps them begin processing how the experience has impacted them and how they can integrate what they’ve learned into their everyday lives at home. We emphasize that mission doesn’t end when the trip ends—it continues in each person’s community, shaped by what God has done. Through this intentional approach, our prayer is that every team member would not only contribute to meaningful, locally led work, but also experience personal growth, deeper discipleship, and a clearer sense of their role in God’s global mission.

Mission Trip Offered By Forward Edge International

Forward Edge is a Christ-centered, international non-profit partnering with local leaders to help children and families overcome poverty and thrive. Our mission is to transform the lives of children trapped in poverty through Christ-centered holistic care, meeting physical needs while nurturing spiritual, emotional, and educational growth.

We believe the Gospel must be both demonstrated and declared. That means showing God’s love through tangible acts of compassion and boldly sharing the hope of Jesus in word and deed. Neither is complete without the other.

In long-term partnerships with communities across eight countries, we support programs led by local visionaries who understand the strengths and challenges of their people. Together, we’re addressing root causes of poverty and building sustainable paths to transformation.

As a mission team member, you’ll step into this ongoing work, not as a hero, but as a learner and co-laborer. You might help with children’s programs, meal distribution, home repairs, or outreach events, but the heart of the experience is building relationships across cultures and being shaped by them.

Our trips are designed to be deeply relational and reflective. You’ll be equipped before, during, and after your trip to listen well, engage with humility, and discern how God is working both in the community and in you.

We believe mission is not just about what you do, it’s about who you become. When you encounter God through both the joy and the challenge of cross-cultural service, you return home with deeper compassion, renewed perspective, and a greater sense of purpose in God’s mission.
