Where are we going?
Iviani is a village in the Mtito Andei Division neighboring Tsavo Game Reserve. The village has an estimated population of 12,000 and is known for its friendly, family-oriented residents. However, the community faces significant challenges, most notably the presence of elephants. Tsavo Game Reserve is home to Kenya’s largest elephant population, which makes farming difficult for local agricultural families whose primary crop is maize..

A typical annual household income is around 30,000 Kenyan Shillings (about $230 USD), and living conditions are simple and demanding. Most families live in homes made of handmade mud bricks with thatched roofs, typically one or two rooms, with kitchens and latrines located outside. Despite these challenges, the people of Iviani are resilient, hardworking, and deeply committed to their community.

How are we going to serve?
During the trip, participants will serve at Iviani DEB Primary School in Mtito Andei alongside our partner Elizabeth Muthai, the school’s principal, and her staff. In recent years, Advance Mission teams have helped expand the school by constructing classrooms and beginning a new multi purpose building to support the growing student body.

In recent years, Advance Mission teams have helped expand the school by constructing classrooms and, more recently, completing a much-needed well that now provides clean water for the school and the surrounding community. The well was installed by a professional borehole company to address ongoing water shortages caused by irregular rainfall.

Building on this work, participants will help with next phase of development by constructing a perimeter wall to protect the campus from elephants, an essential step for student safety, and by continuing progress toward a future multipurpose and administration building to support the school’s growing student body.

Food, Lodging, and Travel
Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, you’ll be greeted by Advance Mission staff. Most teams travel directly to Tsavo, while late-night arrivals will stay at a nearby hotel before continuing the journey the next morning. The trip to Tsavo is approximately a four-hour bus ride including cultural orientation upon arrival.

Teams stay at Tsavo Inn near Mtito Andei, where all meals and team gatherings will take place. Main diet includes bread, potatoes, cornmeal, beef, chicken, eggs, rice, beans, vegetables, avocados, and fresh fruit such as pineapple, bananas, and papaya.

After several days of ministry, the team will enjoy a time of rest with a visit to Amboseli National Park. Participants will stay overnight at Tukai Lodge and experience an early-morning safari, offering a unique opportunity to see African wildlife up close.

Following the game park visit, the team will return to Nairobi for their evening flight. If time allows, the group may visit the Giraffe Center, enjoy a safari through Nairobi National Park, and shop for souvenirs at the Maasai Market before departing for home.

Is the Trip Safe?
Safety is a top priority for Advance Mission and our host partners. Iviani is considered a safe community – we do not anticipate safety concerns. Advance Mission will cancel or suspend a trip if conditions change and participant safety is at risk.
